How to monitor PostgreSQL from your Mac’s notch

A dashboard shows what is wrong when someone looks at it. A CoIsland monitor runs a query on its own schedule and opens the notch only when the answer changes: a new row, or a count crossing a line.

Each monitor is a file in ~/.coisland/watches:

Connect PostgreSQL covers every field, TLS and each error. MySQL works the same way; all connectors share one page.

Connect it in three steps

Get a host, a user and a password from your server or your provider's Connect page. A user that can only read is safest.
Add a PostgreSQL connector. Test connector says who you are, the server's version and how the connection is encrypted.
Pick Custom SQL, Validation or an example: each checks every 15 minutes unless you change it.

Built for PostgreSQL

Every check is one statement in a read-only transaction, rolled back: PostgreSQL itself refuses any write.
TLS is on and the certificate verified by default, by macOS, as for every other connector.
The password stays in the macOS Keychain and goes only to your server.
No driver to install: CoIsland speaks PostgreSQL's protocol itself.

PostgreSQL questions

Can CoIsland change anything in my database?

No. Only SELECT, WITH or SHOW is accepted, each runs alone inside BEGIN READ ONLY and is rolled back, so PostgreSQL refuses a write even hidden in a CTE. A role with SELECT only, or pg_read_all_data, is safer still.

Does it work with Supabase, Neon or Amazon RDS?

Yes, with the host, user and password from their Connect page. Neon's certificate is verified by default. Supabase, RDS and Cloud SQL sign theirs with their own authority: choose Encrypted, server not verified, or trust their root certificate in Keychain Access.

Does a check load my database?

One connection and one statement per check, every 15 minutes by default. Index what the WHERE reads, and point it at a replica if you have one.

Hear about the emails that matter, not every email. Unread mail, chosen senders, labels, Drive comments and invitations reach your Mac's notch, and nothing is marked read.
